are GLP-1s undoing women’s body acceptance work?
when weight loss isn't the goal
I first heard it from a one-on-one client last winter, towards the end of our time working together –“My doctor told me they want to put me on a GLP-1. But we just bought all these clothes together.” There was genuine disappointment. She, like most of my clients, had been on a years-long journey to reclaim her body from diet culture and move towards, if not body acceptance, at least a calm co-existence. What would she do if she had to get all new clothes – again?
A few months later, I heard the same thing from a client whose closet we’d been working to clear out. It was shared almost like bad news – we’ve tried other things to lower blood sugar and they haven’t worked. My doctor wants me to try this. This client had also worked for years to recover from disordered eating. After having worked for years to curate a closet of beautiful clothes in larger sizes, what would it mean if she became smaller?
A key piece of my work with women and their wardrobes is acknowledging and accepting that…
