It's one thing to know from experience that sizing makes no sense, and another to know that it makes no sense because of the same reasons that many other things don't make sense: sexism and racism. Grateful to have this background info!

My question is how to reconcile these discrepancies between sizes with online thrift shopping. Some thrifting sites like Poshmark have very inflexible return policies. It feels like shopping on those sites always involves a roll of the dice, hoping for the best that whatever item will fit. Do you simply not shop on those sites?

If I do, it is only with items I've already tried on elsewhere, or that I know my size in.

So infuriating! I recently had a free afternoon and popped into Old navy just to look. I tried on three different pant styles in the same size and they all fit (or didn’t fit) differently! I sized up in two styles and they fit even worse/weirdly. I chalked it up to the brand’s crappy sizing. Thanks for this!

And we’re supposed to be able to buy online and then not have to make a return?! It’s impossible!

Re: Banana Republic, I did see something recently about the history of the brand that was pretty interesting and made the brand name make sense (even though obviously yes it’s still weirdly colonialist as a choice and it was always a bad idea).

And I have definitely noticed this shift in men’s clothing. My husband is very long-waisted, and I have been genuinely shocked by how few companies share the length of their t-shirts. He’s also fat, and the men’s “big and tall” world is somehow even worse than women’s plus sizes?? He wears suits to work, and when we got to get suits, I can absolutely tell which places actually used someone with a different body to make their higher sized patterns and which just scaled it up. His sister got married recently, and she and her fiancé chose a rental suit, and it was absolutely a scaled up size. We had actually ordered one to buy, since my partner wears a lot of suits, and the fit was so bad that we sent it back. And the suit didn’t even fit the fiancé properly!!

This is also a good reminder to take my things to be altered!!
