One thing about this substack, regardless of how excited I am about any particular post, I feel as if it gives me permission to write about clothes and my relationship with clothes and my body and the intersection between clothing the body I have and the societal structures that are committed to making me feel bad about it and... and... and... I adore the suffusion of motivation I get when I read a post and feel "yes! someone else thinks this is worth writing about! Other people have thoughts about getting dressed! Clothes matter!"
I agree and share your enthusiasm. I find myself writing quite a bit about clothing my body, about respecting and honoring it. I'm also surprised that I have quite a committed little following on social media as a result; other women celebrating themselves and their style. It's a fun thing to participate in. Thanks, Dacy, for giving me the courage (and the confidence). It's every woman's art.
Enjoyed this so much and look forward to this series. I love clothes and am happy to be in online spaces where women like you and Virginia are grappling with things like fit, size, access, comfort, how to dress for our (changing) bodies and celebrating STYLE. Oh and I totally love the Proust Questionnaire but haven't read a VF in years so thank you for that!
What a wonderfully fun surprise of an email! I also love questionnaires! And I found you through Virginia which makes this feel even more fun. Thank you Dacy!
I am SO excited for this series! I literally took a quick break from work to check it out when I was the email notification - unfortunately, work beckons me but I'll be back with a glass of wine later to relax and enjoy!
This was a very encouraging read - I can relate to much of her story. I'm in my early 50's and my body has changed so much since leaving diet culture + menopause. I love how comfortable she is with herself (and therefore her body) which allows her to lean in to what she loves (clothes-wise). I can also relate to the prioritization of comfort - I definitely do this more now than ever - but the challenge can be in finding clothes that still fit the classy, put-together style I prefer. I also very much related to her comment on "fat-tax". I also have financial privilege however it annoys me to no end that I can't find anything at Target at a decent price point and pay double or more for items that fit me. I also enjoyed the articles from her newsletter that you included. I haven't read them all yet - but they are spot on.
This sort of content (questionnaires/personal style/day-in-the-life type stuff) is some of MY FAVORITE to read, what a treat to see it in this context with you asking the questions, Dacy! What a fabulous inaugural guest; I'm so excited to see who else you'll feature!
Fabulous. Loved this interview. Virginia is an interesting, funny, and thoughtful interviewee and your questions are probing and lend themselves to an enlightening conversation. I'm glad you're kicked off this series with her. I read the interview twice and now will read her posts before going back to work. I promised my boss I'd complete two major tasks today (which delighted her no end as she hadn't expected me to) and now I've gone down the Dacy-Virginia road and it's going to be hard to come back. Brava!
I love this! Looking forward to the series!

body changes are so hard and disorienting, and yes, it is so helpful to have role models navigating them.
